Investment in Space Power Technologies, Inc.
Innovation Kyoto 2016 Investment Limited Partnership ("KYOTO-iCAP No.1 Fund"), with Kyoto University Innovation Capital Corporation ("Kyoto iCAP") (Head office: Sakyo-ku, Kyoto; Representative Director: Koji Murota) as general partner, has made an investment in Space Power Technologies Inc. ("SPT") (Head office: Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto; Representative Director: Minoru Furukawa), a venture company that utilizes research results from Kyoto University.
Outline of this investment
SPT is a startup that develops and manufactures a highly efficient wireless power supply system using microwaves, which was developed by Professor Masaki Shinohara of the Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere Research, Kyoto University, in his research on space photovoltaics. SPT aims to improve the convenience of energy use by providing a means of supplying energy to mobile terminals, sensors, and other devices that require frequent battery replacement and recharging in a society where everything will be connected by IoT in the future.
Professor Shinohara's research at Kyoto University focuses on wireless power transmission using microwaves, including research on power transmission systems, target location estimation and beamforming techniques, power receiving systems, and microwave process equipment, with the ultimate goal of realizing a space solar power generation system. Professor Shinohara is also one of the founders of SPT and will serve as its scientific advisor.
Kyoto iCAP has decided to invest in this project in the hope that SPT will open new avenues for the use of various sensors that could not be used in the past due to power supply restrictions in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, thereby opening up many new markets. The decision to invest in Kyoto iCAP was made with the expectation that these technological developments will help realize space solar power generation using microwave power transmission technology. Kyoto iCAP is a joint venture between K4 Ventures (Head office: Kita-ku, Osaka; Representative Partner: Takashi Morimoto, The Kansai Electric Power Company, Inc. (headquartered in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City; President: Naoto Matsumoto) as general partner, together with Kyoshin Innovation C Investment Limited Partnership and Kyoto City Startup Support Investment Limited Partnership, underwrote approximately 100 million yen of the total 180 million yen capital increase through third-party allocation.
