Innovation Kyoto 2016 Investment Limited Partnership ("KYOTO-icap No.1 Fund"), with Kyoto University Innovation Capital Corporation ("Kyoto iCAP") (Head office: Sakyo-ku, Kyoto; Representative Director: Kimi Kusumi) as general partner, has made an investment in U-MAP Inc. (hereinafter referred to as "U-MAP") (Head office: Chikusa-ku, Nagoya; Representative Director: Kenji Nishitani), a venture company that utilizes research results from Kyoto University.

Outline of this investment
U-MAP is a venture company established based on the highly efficient mass synthesis technology of aluminum nitride whiskers invented by Professor Toru Ujihara of the Graduate School of Engineering, Nagoya University. U-MAP has concluded joint research agreements with Professor Shizuo Fujita and Professor Tsunenobu Kimoto of the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, respectively, and is working to establish design specifications and start demonstration tests for heat-dissipating components required for modules using U-MAP products.

Aluminum nitride is an electrically insulating ceramics material with thermal conductivity comparable to that of metallic aluminum. As a ceramic material, it has excellent heat dissipation properties and durability. When mixed with other ceramics, resins, rubber, adhesives, oils, etc., small amounts can be used to make insulating high-performance composite materials with high heat dissipation properties.

Through its research to date, U-MAP has established stable single-crystal and surface processing technologies for aluminum nitride, and possesses production technologies that can supply aluminum nitride with less environmental impact by suppressing the generation of ammonia gas due to hydrolysis, which has been a problem in the past.

Kyoto iCAP has decided to underwrite 50 million yen of the total capital increase of approximately 300 million yen through a third-party allotment, based on its evaluation of the potential of U-MAP, given the high need for thermal countermeasures for materials used in integrated circuits, LEDs, automobiles, and other applications. The capital increase was also supported by Realtech Japan LLC, OKB Capital, Shinsei Bank, and Tokai Tokyo Investment Co.
