New Investment in Symbiobe Corporation

Innovation Kyoto 2021 Investment Limited Partnership ("KYOTO-icap No.2 Fund"), with Kyoto University Innovation Capital Corporation ("Kyoto iCAP") (Head office: Sakyo-ku, Kyoto; Representative Director: Kimi Kusumi) as unlimited liability partner, has made a new investment in Kyoto University venture company (Head office: Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto; Representative Director: Keisuke Go), a venture company originating from Kyoto University.

Outline of this investment
Symbiobe is a Kyoto University venture established in January 2021 based on the research results of Professor Keiji Numata of the Department of Materials Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University, on CO2 and N2 fixation and biomaterials production technology using marine photosynthetic bacteria. It has also been selected for the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization's (NEDO) 2021 Research and Development Start-up Support Program (NEDO-STS).

Global warming countermeasures are an urgent issue in realizing a sustainable society, and countries around the world are accelerating their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by declaring short- and mid-term greenhouse gas reduction targets and carbon neutrality in the future. Japan has also declared that it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 461 TP3T in FY2030 compared to FY13, and that it will be carbon neutral by 2050. At the same time, global warming countermeasures are positioned not from the perspective of conventional economic constraints, but as a green growth strategy, a major growth opportunity that will bring about changes in industrial structure and the social economy.

In response to these global trends, Symbiobe's marine photosynthetic bacteria can absorb and fix CO2 and N2, and are expected to contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality. The marine photosynthetic bacteria can also produce biomaterials such as biodegradable bioplastics and nitrogen fertilizers from the fixed CO2 and N2. Therefore, we aim to contribute to the conservation of the natural environment and avoidance of food shortages through the production of biomaterials and nitrogen fertilizers.

Kyoto iCAP highly evaluated the potential of Symbiobe's technologies for CO2 and N2 fixation by marine photosynthetic bacteria and production of biomaterials and other products, and made a new investment of approximately 35 million yen through a third-party allocation of new shares. The total amount raised this time is approximately 70 million yen, and in addition to Kyoto iCAP, an investment limited partnership managed by Beyond Next Ventures, Inc.
