Innovation Kyoto 2021 Investment Limited Partnership ("KYOTO-ICAP No.2 Fund"), with Kyoto University Innovation Capital Corporation ("Kyoto iCAP") (Head Office: Sakyo-ku, Kyoto; Representative Director: Ko Kusumi) as unlimited liability partner, has made a new investment in Kyoto University venture company Kyoto Text Lab Inc. (Head office: Sakyo-ku, Kyoto; Representative Director: Masanobu Matsuo), a venture company originating from Kyoto University.
Outline of this investment
Kyoto Text Lab was established by a research team headed by Associate Professor Riro Nomura of Kyoto University's Graduate School of Education, in collaboration with Associate Professor Daisuke Kawahara of the Graduate School of Informatics (currently Professor of the Department of Information and Communication, School of Fundamental Science and Engineering, Waseda University) and Professor Masanobu Matsuo of Kyoto University of Information Sciences (currently President of Kyoto Text Lab), as part of Kyoto University's program to support entrepreneurial activities ( Based on the "Development and release of a financial forecasting system based on multilingual sentiment analysis" worked on under the GAP Fund, this is the first venture in Japan to be established by experts in psychology and informatics and to fully integrate research results.
The research team has demonstrated through a fusion of research results from psychology and informatics that the psychology and emotions of people exposed to textual information, such as news and social networking services, have a significant impact on certain social and economic trends. By combining the most advanced natural language processing models in informatics with the knowledge of emotions and cognitive biases (or emotions and decision making) in psychology, the team has succeeded in forecasting financial indicators with unprecedented accuracy. By being the first in Japan to combine the latest research findings from psychology and informatics, Kyoto Text Lab plans to launch a new application that is deeply rooted in the relationship between psychology, emotion, language, society, and economics.
Kyoto iCAP has executed a 30 million yen investment to support the activities of Kyoto Text Lab in anticipation of its contribution to the creation of new communication among companies, organizations, and individuals, as well as to the improvement of mental health.
