Investment in Holobio Inc.
Innovation Kyoto 2021 Investment Limited Partnership ("KYOTO-ICAP No.2 Fund"), with Kyoto University Innovation Capital Corporation ("Kyoto iCAP") (Head Office: Sakyo-ku, Kyoto; Representative Director: Kimi Kusumi) as unlimited liability partner, has made an investment in Holobio Inc. (Head office: Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto; Representative Director: Masato Umeda), a venture company that utilizes the results of research at Kyoto University.
Outline of this investment
Holobio is a Kyoto University startup that develops technology to improve the growth and health of farmed fish by feeding them food containing functional intestinal bacteria established from fish, which grow in their intestines.
While the Japanese fisheries market has been slightly declining due to a decrease in the fishing population and catch limits, the global market is a growing industry. However, declining fishery resources due to fish overfishing, increasing environmental impact due to ocean pollution, and soaring fishery costs are becoming social problems. In addition, while technological development of land-based aquaculture and artificial aquaculture is underway to achieve sustainable fisheries, there are issues such as poor growth and sudden death of fish compared to natural fish. Holobio focuses on the fact that the intestinal bacteria of farmed fish are poorer than those of natural fish, and aims to improve the intestinal microflora by feeding functional intestinal bacteria to promote growth and prevent infection of farmed fish.
Kyoto iCAP has made a new investment of 40 million yen in the hope that Holobio's technology for establishing functional intestinal bacteria and improving bacterial flora will contribute to increasing the catch of farmed fish and, in turn, curbing overfishing of fish for food and improving marine pollution. The total amount raised this time is 50 million yen, and in addition to Kyoto iCAP, Chushin Venture and Investment Fund No. 6 Investment Limited Partnership managed by Chushin Venture Capital Co. With this financing, Holobio will establish and select useful intestinal bacteria strains by Bri and others, and evaluate their efficacy through artificial seedling production.
