Innovation Kyoto 2016 Investment Limited Partnership ("KYOTO-iCAP No.1 Fund"), with Kyoto University Innovation Capital Corporation ("Kyoto iCAP") (Head office: Sakyo-ku, Kyoto; Representative Director: Koji Murota) as unlimited liability partner, has made an investment in LegalForce Inc. 0Execution of investment in LegalForce
LegalForce is a legal tech venture founded by a team of lawyers from a major law firm and young engineers majoring in information processing engineering, together with Professor Shinsuke Mori (Kyoto University Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies/ Graduate School of Informatics, Department of Intelligent Informatics), who is highly experienced and knowledgeable in natural language processing technology. The company is a legal tech start-up. Legal departments of major corporations and law firms are required to deal with increasingly sophisticated and complex business content and compliance, but at the same time, they are not free from simple tasks such as reviewing routine contracts, and their working environment is becoming increasingly harsh.
LegalForce launched a beta version of its AI-powered contract review support software "LegalForce" in August 2018 with the goal of streamlining the contract review process and allowing legal professionals to focus on more sophisticated decision-making tasks. Within three months of its release, "LegalForce" has been implemented by approximately 70 companies, including major corporations and law firms.
LegalForce is conducting joint research with Kyoto University's Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies to improve the accuracy of contract review using natural language processing and machine learning techniques. In addition, through an academic guidance agreement with Associate Professor Kohei Suenaga of Kyoto University's Graduate School of Informatics (Department of Computer Engineering, Division of Communication and Information Systems, Graduate School of Informatics), the company aims to improve the accuracy of AI using formal verification technology (*), a different approach from machine learning. Furthermore, the company plans to open an R&D base in Kyoto with the funds raised this time.

Kyoto iCAP highly appreciates LegalForce's challenge to revolutionize legal services through technology, and welcomes the company's efforts to further strengthen industry-academia collaboration with Kyoto University. In light of the above, Kyoto iCAP is pleased to participate in LegalForce's Series A round of financing of approximately 500 million yen, together with Jafco, Inc. and Dream Incubator Inc. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Takayoshi Yamakawa) participated in the round A and underwrote 70 million yen of the total amount.
